Foreign students of Nepali schools located abroad and foreign students studying in Nepal will be able to study Social Studies of class 10 in English only.
The meeting of the National Curriculum Development and Evaluation Council opened it for the Secondary Education Examination (SEE). The council meeting was chaired by Education, Science and Technology Minister Ashok Rai.
Currently, secondary level schools are operating in Japan and students there have been participating in SEE for the past few years.
Similarly, foreign students are also studying in some schools run in Nepal and they have been participating in SEE. Earlier, they were allowed to study optional English subject instead of compulsory Nepali subject. The sons and daughters of employees of foreign diplomatic missions are also studying here in Nepal.
Undecided Class 12
A proposal was submitted in the council meeting about allowing Social Studies and Life Skill education of Class 12 to be studied in English. But there was no decision about the proposal.
The council member said, "It has been agreed to study more about it and submit a proposal in another meeting." There is no change for the time being and until another decision is made, Social Studies and Life Skill educations' subject in class 12 must be taught in Nepali language and students must answer in Nepali medium in the examinations as well.
Confusion was created a few days ago when the
National Examinations Board put up the model question paper of Class 12 Social Studies and Life Skill in English on its website. This issue was made controversial after the news that the related officers of the board can write answers in Nepali or English medium on this matter.
Soon after, the board corrected the model question paper saying that it will be implemented after the approval of the course evaluation council.
"Since yesterday's meeting did not decide on this, the students who are now preparing for the class 12 exam will have to write their answers in Nepali," said the member of the council.
